Champlain College Saint-Lambert is pleased to announce that  Alain Blondeau will be the new Offensive Coordinator of the Champlain Cavaliers Football team. Coach Blondeau is coming back to coaching after taking a year off, prior to which he led the Édouard-Montpetit Football program dating back to 1999. “I am very happy that Alain accepted to become our new OC. His vast experience of the game will help our current players and his knowledge of the different teams on the South Shore will contribute positively to our recruitment,” said Head Coach Frank Chagnon, of the Champlain Cavaliers. “Alain knows what we value here at Champlain and how we view the student-athlete experience. He knows that we want to see a prosperous football program, but not at the expense of a student-athlete’s education.” Coach Blondeau started his coaching career in the 1970′s with the St-Hubert Rebelles. He taught football at Collège Charles-Lemoyne and founded the Metro.com team for the Wilson Challenge. He brought the Édouard-Montpetit team to the Bol d’Or semi-finals after their second season in the Division 1 league. Over the years, Coach Blondeau has assisted in the development of student-athletes such as Mathieu Bertrand, Patrick Dorvelus and Kristian Matte. He holds a Level 3 certification from the NCCP and has participated in numerous coaching clinics in the USA. “Following a one year break, I’ve decided to return to coaching in order to help young men become better student-athletes,” stated Blondeau. His nomination is effective immediately.

The Cavaliers started the second half of their seasons this past Sunday (January 12) with a double-header at home against South Shore rivals, Édouard-Montpetit. The ladies, who were 6-2 going into the holiday break and in 4th place in the highly competitive RSEQ league, got off to a slow start but managed to take a 30-23 lead into half-time. The second half was explosive for the Cavaliers as they dominated, outscoring les Lynx 31-9 in the 2nd half alone. The win moves the Cavaliers, who are now 7-2, ahead of Ste-Foy and into 3rd place due to Dawson currently having the tie-breaker. Jeanne Gaumont had 16 points for the Cavaliers while Isabelle Dion and Sirah Diarra each had 12 points and 8 rebounds. The men have had a tough first half and are currently in 6th place with a 2-8 record. With new Head Coach Dan Martin at the helm, the Cavaliers were looking to get a key victory to stay in the play-off race. The team started of slow, falling behind in the early minutes but by the end of the 1st quarter they were up by 1. The pace was rough and tumble, with a lot of back and forth between two fairly matched teams. At the half, the Cavaliers had upped their lead to 5, 33-28. The team exploded in the 3rd quarter, outscoring Édouard 22-7 and took a 20 point lead into the home stretch. The game ended with the Cavaliers winning 66-52 in what many considered to be a must-win. Kasheem Thomas led the team with 21 points, while Alex Paquin, playing his first game since late October, scored 14. Sebastien Denault had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Nick Harvey was also a force on the boards with 10 rebounds. Both teams head uptown to face Vanier on Thursday, January 16th. The women tip-off at 7:00 PM while the men begin at 9:00 PM.

Women's Rigby - 2013

The Quebec Rugby Federation held an Identification Camp for Quebec Women’s Rugby  in mid-January and the Cavaliers were well represented as 6 ladies from the squad were in attendance. The Cavaliers that were there to showcase their skills were:  Marley Chase, Casey Benoit, Gina L. Patenaude, Rachel Ten Eyck, Catherine Alain and Ophelie Lacasse. Hopefully some of them will be playing for Team Quebec this year and bringing back that experience to the others on the team. In other Rugby news, Rachel Ten Eyck was invited to play with Team Quebec at the New York 7s Tournament back in November 2013, and as a member of the squad, they won the Championship  in the Girls U-18 Division! great job to Rachel and to everyone who represented the Cavaliers at the ID Camp!

Excited that her birthday falls on the International Day of Peace, Alexandra takes advantage of the opportunity every year to inspire others around her to join her in promoting peace, love and harmony. On this day in 2012, Alex motivated friends, family, and colleagues to join her in giving free hugs for peace in downtown Montreal. Alex’s interest for social justice started at a young age, often acting as an advocate for others and enjoying promoting equality amongst her peers. In fact, her passion for people and making a difference inspired her to pursue studies in social services. After she completed her social work degree in university, she had the opportunity to travel all over the world while working with young people. As a globe trotter who loves nature and wildlife, as well as empowering youth, she decided to complete a leadership semester in Costa Rica where she really enjoyed her fieldwork as an outdoor experiential education instructor. Upon her return home, she further pursued her studies to be a guide in adventure tourism. Agreeing with Mark Twain that: ‘Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow mindedness’, Alex enjoys promoting global understanding and tolerance in the world by stimulating interest in other lands, peoples and cultures. A shameless idealist, she dreams of one day seeing a world where everyone would be free and equal in dignity and rights, regardless of where they are born. Alex joined Free The Children in 2012 as a motivational speaker to motivate and inspire youth to live up to their leadership potential; educating, engaging and empowering them to ‘Be the change they want to see in the world’. Join us next Wednesday, February 19 at 12:30 p.m. at the Auditorium to hear what Alexandra Vallières has to say!

After 4 weeks of strength and fitness training under Cavalier Alumni and fitness specialist Hanna Zeidan Benavides, combined with some Futsal, the Champlain College Men’s Soccer took to the field against  the LSEQ Senior AAA RDP team on Saturday, February 15th. The Cavaliers started in a 4-3-3 and controlled the tempo of the game.  The 2nd half saw some substitutions and a switch to a 3-5-2.  The high pressure and extra bodies in the midfield paid off with goals being scored by Felipe Ramirez and Alexandre Garceau giving the Cavaliers a 2-0 victory.  David Bergeron earned the shutout. ” I am very happy with the way the team remained composed against a more experienced and older RDP team,”  stated head coach Mauro Di Ciocco. The Cavaliers return to the fitness room this week before taking on the St-Lambert Senior AAA team on March 5th at the Complexe Bell in Brossard at 19:45.

The 2013-14 RSEQ Division 1 Basketball regular season came to a close on Friday night as the Cavaliers played host to John Abbott College and took home the two victories. The Women’s team, going into the game with an 11-4 record, was already guaranteed a play-off spot but were looking to finish in 3rd place and getting a better match-up for the quarter finals. The team got off to a slow start, missing in close and with their outside shooting off. Abbott was able to capitalize and keep the game close, with the Cavaliers taking a not reassuring 28-22 lead at half-time. The 2nd half saw the Cavaliers take control of the game, outscoring Abbott 44-25. The Cavaliers took the win with a final of 72-47. Senior  Jeanne Gaumont led with 16 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds. Rookies Cindy Laliberté, Katrina Dosado and senior Cassandre Legault all scored in the double-digits, while senior Isabelle Dion had 12 big rebounds. The win has the Cavaliers lock up 3rd place – their best regular season finish ever. The team now preps to play host to 6th place Nouvelles-Frontières on Tuesday at 7:00 PM here at Champlain. A win on Tuesday would propel the team to play at  John Abbott in the RSEQ Division 1 College Basketball Provincials next weekend. On the men’s side, the Cavaliers were coming off of a tight 65-63 win over Dawson last week and looking to end their season with a four-game winning streak. The team had lost two games to John Abbott this season and were looking for redemption in front of their home crowd. With a quick pace to start off the game, the Cavaliers took control for the 1st half and went into the break with a 12 point lead, 39-27. The start of the 2nd half continued with the Cavaliers taking a bigger lead, but John Abbott pushed back, reducing the Cavaliers lead to 8 points. The boys turned the tide in the 4th when senior, Alex Paquin, knocked back 4 consecutive 3-pointers, stopping any momentum that John Abbott had had. The Cavaliers took the game, wining 76-56. Paquin had 18 points, followed by rookies Nicky Noble (16 points) and Tijani Umar (14 points). Senior Sébastien Denault finished the night with 11 rebounds. Although the guys won’t be playing in the play-offs, they showed tremendous courage and heart this season, especially during the past few weeks, and that effort and determination bodes well for the 2014-15 season.

The Cavaliers Men’s Soccer team completed their Winter Indoor training season with a perfect record after a 1–0 victory over FC St-Bruno Senior Men’s team from the LSEQ Div. 2 on Sunday in St-Hyacinthe. Charles Carrier-Cote tapped in a rebound in the 60th minute after a superb 1 vs 1 effort by Alexandre Garceau that ended with a shot to the far post. The game was a very physical event that provided a good test for the Cavaliers against the much more experienced St-Bruno side. “There was a lot of emotion on the field despite this just being a friendly and it is good for us to continue to learn how to play under these types of conditions”, stated Head Coach Mauro Di Ciocco. Goalkeepers David Bergeron and Charles Thibault-Gagnon combined for the shutout. After a series of exhibition matches and an intense strength and conditioning program during the Winter, the Cavaliers now release their players so they may prepare for their club seasons this summer. NOTE: The game marked the end of the Champlain careers for captain Olivier Georges (Concordia University) , Luca Valsorda (Concordia University) and Antoine Laliberte (Universite de Laval). Good luck and thanks for everything you added to the team and program!
